Yesterday was Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av. This is a day of mourning and remberance of the destruction of the first and second Temples. It is also a day of fasting, so from the end of the Sabbath on Saturday (actually, I cheated a little and waited until after dinner at 9:00) and for 25 hours, observant Jews are not allowed food or water.
Surprisingly, Kat and I managed OK. I was a little hungry in the evening, and it was tough to resist the urge to snack or get a drink during the day, but we managed to hold out, almost to the end. Kat broke her fast about 2 hours early, but she wasn't feeling well and had a headache. I tried to wait until 10:00, but hunger, thirst, and habit won out, and I had some grapefruit joice and apple sauce at 9:30, a half-hour from the end of the fast.
If nothing else, this proves three things. First, I am serious enough about my commitment to conversion to give up food and water for over 24 hours. Second, I can acutally handle a 24 hour fast (acutally, the food wasn't the real problem as much as it was the lack of water). Third, after 24 hours without being able to bathe (anopther proscription of the holiday), nothing feels as good as a bubble bath!
