Writer's Block: One Hit Wonder Day

Today's National One Hit Wonder Day. Whole albums or entire ouvres can be quite impressive, but more often than not, individual songs have the largest impact on us. Which one hit wonders have played a major role in your life?

There's a couple of one-hit wonders that have turned me into the oddball I am today, but I'm going to focus on one:

A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran

One of the first videos I ever saw back in the infancy of MTV (with the original VJs introducing the songs). It was (and is) the archetypal expression of the "New Wave" movement in music, performance, fashion, and the creation of a culture based on style without substance . There isn't anyone who has listened to the radio or watched VH1 that doesn't know this song by heart, even if they don't want to admit it.

Ten years later, in 1991, I saw the band perform live at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC. The lead singer's voice was thin and reedy, drowned out by the synthesizers, and it was clear that they were only doing it for the money. Despite that, the show is a touchstone for me, because it was part of a weekend that launched me from the relative security of college, into the more risky but infinitely more rewarding life of an adult. It was fitting that the song that set the tone for the 80s was now the bookend for that era in my life.
