My personal rant on guns

Just read about another shooting and killing of a black man by a police officer in Cincinatti. This time, it was definitely self-defense. The officer had been fired upon by a sawed-off shotgun, and based on the shell casings, shot at quite a lot.

That's not the fact that troubles me. According to the AP article, "Since the April riots, crime has surged and arrests have dropped as police admitted to holding back for fear of being accused of racism....[a]s of Thursday, a total of 73 shootings since the riots had left 85 people wounded or killed, compared with nine shootings and 11 victims for the same period last year"

I'm not a rabid right-winger, I don't belong to the NRA, I don't own a gun, and frankly don't have a personal liking for guns. I have a friend who owns a gun, and I have politely asked him to please not bring it into my house.

At the same time, I am related to and are aquainted with several members of the local law enforcement community, and the fear of them being shot just on the way to and from work because of wearing the uniform scares the everliving shit out of me. I strongly believe in an officer's right to defend themselves from attack without fear of retribution, cries of political incorrectness, and being tried by the media

I am not an advocate of gun control, but I am a strong believer in gun law enforcement and education. I believe a person should be allowed to own a handgun for personal defense, BUT must first go through a thorough course of training (firing range), education, and awareness of existing gun laws. This should apply to law enforcement officials as well. That badge does not make you invulnerable, and a Kevlar vest won't save you from a head shot. Indiana just lost an officer earlier this month.

I don't want a ton of new gun laws based on knee-jerk reactions. I want the existing laws clearly spelled out, and vigorously and unwaveringly enforced. If you are found with an unlicensed gun, go to jail. Use a gun in the comission of a crime, go to jail. Shoot a gun and wound a person, go to jail even longer. Use a gun and kill a person, go to jail and don't ever get out except feet first. No question, no dispute, no ifs, ands, or buts. Put some teeth into the laws, and you may find they get broken a whole lot less.

Race has nothing to do with it; recklessness, stupidity, and endangering other people's lives has EVERYTHING to do with it. Get the guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals, but get them into the hands of law-abiding citizens.
