I was watching MTV this morning, something that I hardly ever do. However, with their 20th anniversary, they've been showing videos, so I decided to chance it. They were just entering the 90s, and started off the hour with Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U"

I love this video. Sinead had started growing her hair back, so she had about an inch length all around. It was just a headshot of her in a black turtleneck, but with her huge eyes, odd-shaped ears, and soulful voice (admittedly studio enhanced), it was such a striking image in 1990, and it still is. I am probably in the minority here, and other Sinead fans would probably think I was a major pig for saying this, but I think Sinead O'Connor is very sexy in that video. There's no tits and ass, and no writhing around, but her simple, direct approach is so incredibly alluring...but I digress.

Anyway, I was really enjoying it when, about a minute through, they put the little credit up on the bottom and ended the video. What the fuck? THIS is why I don't watch MTV, or even VH1, any more. They give us little snippets of videos and leave us hanging.

I am a true child of MTV, and I remember watching whatever 4-minute "promotional videos" they put on, simply because it was new and occasionally innovative. So what that you can't name half of the bands they played, and the ones I do remember (A Flock of Seagulles in particular) have become the punchline to any number of "bad 80s music" jokes.

It wasn't until the late 80s that videos gave way to game shows, beach parties, and "rockumentaries". By the early 1990s, MTV both sucked and blew. Now the only thing I watch on it is Celebrity Deathmatch, Sunday Night Heat, and the occasional episode of Jackass. The one music channel that I do watch is VHI Classic, where all of those artsy-fartsy videos of days gone by can still be seen.

I want my MTV, and I do mean MY MTV!
